Federal and state investigators are probing an officer-involved shooting in northeastern Oklahoma after two people died following a high-speed pursuit that began with a reported car theft. Authorities say the episode, which ended near Miami, Oklahoma, has left key questions about how a passenger sustained fatal wounds.
Law enforcement linked the vehicle to a reported theft in Joplin, Missouri, and tracked it into Oklahoma on the morning of June 16. Officials say the vehicle was first located at a casino in Quapaw, roughly 10 miles west of Joplin, before a chase unfolded.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, the sequence moved quickly: when officers approached the car, the driver fled. The agency reports the driver later brandished a handgun during the pursuit. At one point, the vehicle was traveling east in the westbound lanes of Interstate 44 in Miami.
The car stopped near Exit 313 after officers had blocked the highway. Both occupants — an adult male driver and an adult female passenger — then exited the vehicle. OSBI says the male again displayed a firearm and did not follow officers’ commands; officers opened fire and the two were declared dead at the scene.
