Deal looks to uncover undervalued property - County and school officials say deal paying off for taxpayers

For a fifth-straight year, Canadian County Commissioners last week inked a deal with Visual Lease Services aimed at boosting property tax revenues — a deal area officials say has exceeded “all expectations.”

Jimmy Dix
Graveside services for Jimmy J. Dix, 70, were held Saturday at Red Hill Cemetery southwest of Mustang, under direction of McNeil’s Mustang Funeral Service.

Mr. Dix died May 14 at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was born Dec. 22, 1937, in Pittsburg and grew up in Pittsburg and Clinton. He was a 1956 graduate of Clinton High School and served six years in the Army National Guard. He moved to Oklahoma City in 1961. He was an insurance agent and had worked since 1972 for B.L. Bishop and Associates.

Commissioner calls Ramsey’s run ‘disloyal’

Commissioner Don Young asked Teresa Ramsey to resign Friday, after learning she intended to enter the District 2 County Commissioner race.

Ramsey announced her candidacy last week. She said she has been a Canadian County employee for 22 years and has worked for nine commissioners. The conversation with Young Friday “blew me away,” she said.

Taco Mayo plans get Council OK

Taco Mayo cleared the last hurdle Tuesday in its bid to open a Mustang location, as City Council unanimously approved the preliminary and final plats for the site.

The restaurant will be located just west of state Highway 152 and Sara Road. Residents on adjoining Maryella Terrace voiced strong opposition to the rezoning of the property earlier this year.

MHS graduates advised to ‘believe in yourself,’ ‘others’

Class of 2008 top valedictorian Nhi Nguyen told her classmates she learned many lessons at Mustang High School — the most important one is to persevere.

“Believe in yourself,” she said Friday night during the commencement ceremony at Lloyd Noble Stadium. “Believe in others, and believe in this class because believe it or not we are the future, and we can make a difference. We will be the one making the impact in the world.”

Memorial Day remembrance set

Old Glory will wave over Memorial Day ceremonies this weekend as Mustang American Legion members lead remembrances for veterans.

American Legion Post 353 members will place U.S. flags on veterans’ graves in the Mustang Cemetery Sunday afternoon, in preparation for a Memorial Day service, which starts at 11 a.m. Monday.

The post members invite the public to attend, Commander Don Kuntze said. Army veteran Randy Rader will speak during the ceremony. Mustang High School JROTC cadets and the American Legion Post 353 Honor Guard honor guard will conduct flag ceremonies.

Cooking up comfort - Free meals offered for aid donations

Yuan Zhong Chen will serve up free meals Saturday at his Old Time Buffet in Mustang, only asking those who eat to open their hearts and wallets to help China’s earthquake victims.

The area of China Chen called home 15 years ago is hundreds of miles south of Chengdu, the epicenter of a 7.9 Richter scale earthquake that struck heavily populated cities at about 1:30 a.m. Central Daylight Time May 12. Chinese government officials have reported more than 70,000 people are dead or missing, and more than 5 million are homeless.
