Gus’s Grocer and Deli first opened in 1989, launched by Mike and Ellen Stanton after Ellen purchased the storefront while still a Cal Poly student. The business later passed to a longtime manager, and after staffing shortages and equipment failures the deli closed in January 2025.
“This space sits in our block, where our children go to school and our neighbors gather,” Anna explained to the local paper, emphasizing the couple’s commitment to running a community-focused operation.
Menu changes driven by accessibility and taste
Renovations are not only cosmetic. The Brannens are designing a kitchen workflow that includes dedicated equipment and preparation areas for gluten-free items — a personal priority for Anna, who lives with celiac disease and wants the offerings to match the quality of the deli’s traditional food.
They also plan to expand plant-based choices, bringing more vegan and vegetarian plates to the menu alongside returning favorites. Community feedback has already shaped the lineup: the Brannens intend to bring back the spiced potato wedges known locally as “Mojos,” plus fried chips and fried pickles, and are exploring a later phase that would reintroduce Gus’s breakfast burritos.
