The Oklahoma State Department of Health reported 172 confirmed cases as of July 20, with 12 people requiring hospital care — a steep jump from 56 cases tallied the previous week. Local officials say the increase reflects both growing transmission and improved detection.
Across the United States, the CDC has logged more than 4,100 laboratory-confirmed cyclosporiasis cases since May 1, with reports coming from 41 states. The agency notes its numbers can trail state reports by several weeks because of testing and verification delays.
Multiple clusters, multiple questions
Investigators are treating at least three distinct outbreaks as they search for sources. One large cluster in Michigan has been tied to a recall of iceberg lettuce produced by Taylor Farms. Other outbreaks remain without a confirmed origin; one recent cluster has sickened at least 72 people and prompted a Food and Drug Administration traceback.

Because Cyclospora cannot be tracked with the same genomic tools used for bacteria such as E. coli, investigators rely heavily on patient interviews and records from distributors and retailers — a process hindered when patients do not seek medical care or cannot recall food exposures.

The expanding geographic reach and rapid week-to-week increases in some states indicate the outbreak is still unfolding. For public-health systems, that raises pressure to speed inspections, improve laboratory testing and accelerate industry cooperation in tracing fresh produce.
Consumers and businesses should watch for official recalls and updates from state health departments and the CDC. Health agencies emphasize that the reported case counts likely underrepresent the outbreak’s true size, so additional states could report linked illnesses in coming weeks.
