Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) has installed 520 solar panels on the roof of the University Union, a recent step intended to push Cal Poly toward on-site renewable electricity goals. The rooftop system adds meaningful capacity to campus power and gives students a visible example of the university’s sustainability commitments.
The new array delivers about 110 kilowatts of capacity and is expected to generate roughly 451,000 kWh per year, according to ASI. In practical terms, that output is comparable to the annual electricity use of about 40 households and reduces carbon emissions by an estimated 219 metric tons each year.

Where this fits into campus targets
Combined with an existing solar installation near the California Men’s Colony, the University Union panels bring Cal Poly close to its target of meeting 30% of campus electricity through on-site solar generation. The effort also aligns with the broader California State University aim to cut greenhouse gas emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2045.
ASI’s sustainability program stretches back decades and has guided campus operations since the late 1970s, when California’s energy-efficiency rules began shaping building projects. On the University Union project, ASI served as the rooftop host while the university arranged financing and procurement through a power purchase agreement.
Project development was not immediate. Facility staff say the idea evolved over roughly ten years, delayed in part because the building’s electrical equipment originally could not accommodate a rooftop array.
To prepare the Union to accept solar input, crews upgraded the building’s electrical protections by installing new switchgear in its mechanical room. That device controls incoming power and prevents damage from surges and short circuits — a necessary step before panels could be connected to the campus grid.
Making energy use legible
Campus facilities and student designers are building a real-time energy dashboard to be mounted on the Union’s second floor. Planners say the display will translate generation and savings into everyday terms so visitors can see how the system performs rather than just reading raw numbers.
As ASI and the university expand on-site renewables, the project serves both operational and educational aims: it increases renewable supply to the grid while creating a live demonstration of campus sustainability in action.
