In a rare meeting of back-to-back award winners, Good Counsel edged Bishop McNamara 2-0 on Tuesday in a WCAC matchup that stayed scoreless until the final inning. The game doubled as a showcase for the two most recent recipients of the High School on SI Maryland Softball Player of the Week honors, underscoring the depth of talent in the league as the season moves into its decisive stretch.
A late burst decides a pitchers’ duel
Bishop McNamara hosted a tight contest that neither side could break open through six innings. The deadlock finally ended in the seventh when Good Counsel put together a two-run rally, keyed by RBIs from Grace Mackrell and Giselle Reyes.

The 2-0 final improved Good Counsel’s record to 10-8 and dropped Bishop McNamara to 11-6. Beyond the scoreboard, the game highlighted strong pitching and defense on both sides, with the winning runs coming from small-ball execution in the game’s last moments.
Camara’s week: power and consistency
Senior Isabel Camara, who has signed with UMBC, earned the Player of the Week nod for April 13–19 after receiving a majority of votes in a 16-player poll. During that span she delivered multiple standout performances, including a three-hit outing with a home run and a multi-RBI day in a dominant 20-1 win over Holy Cross.
She also produced an exceptional offensive showing in a separate game, completing the rare feat of hitting for the cycle and driving in seven runs in a 21-4 win over Elizabeth Seton — performances that gave her a commanding edge in the weekly voting.
Otey’s no-hit outing
Bishop McNamara’s Koryn Otey, a senior committed to Point Park, captured the April 6–12 Player of the Week after a five-inning no-hitter that included 13 strikeouts in a 12-0 shutout of Holy Cross. Her showing narrowly led the 16-player poll with roughly one-third of the vote, reflecting the impact of dominant pitching performances on weekly honors.
Both players posed for a postgame photo together, a moment that captured the friendly rivalry between two seniors who have driven their teams this season.
Early-season poll winners
- March 16–22: Macie Anderson (Kent Island)
- March 23–29: Paulina Mann (Einstein)
- March 30–April 5: Maya Lowery (Brunswick)
- April 6–12: Koryn Otey (Bishop McNamara)
- April 13–19: Isabel Camara (Good Counsel)
Anderson opened the season with a 3-for-3 effort and six RBIs in a 27-0 victory for Kent Island. Paulina Mann delivered a 4-for-4 offensive night plus eight strikeouts on the mound for Einstein, and freshman Maya Lowery posted a perfect day at the plate with a home run and five RBIs in Brunswick’s lopsided win.
The weekly poll has become a snapshot of standout moments across Maryland high school softball; as the regular season progresses, late-season form and consistency will matter more to coaches and college scouts than isolated performances.
With league play heating up, Tuesday’s matchup offered a reminder that individual honors and team results are often linked — a single inning can swing both a game and the narrative for players pushing toward postseason and recruiting milestones.
