Cal Poly opens new semester-transition study rooms for all students

This spring, Cal Poly’s College of Liberal Arts is hosting five drop‑in advising sessions to help students prepare for the campus-wide switch to a semester calendar in fall 2026. These short, in-person events are aimed at clearing up how current quarter credits will map to the new system and at helping students plan a smooth first semester under the new timetable.

Sessions are open to students from any major, but each meeting will include advisors and faculty from the departments listed for that date. Attendance is limited and registration is required; the College is also providing food at the events.

At the advising rooms students can compare quarter and semester course catalogs, consult a semester equivalency guide, confirm how previously earned credits will transfer, and sketch a schedule for their initial semester. Staff will offer one-on-one help with degree planning and course sequencing to minimize disruptions when the calendar changes.

  • Thursday, April 16, 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Building 22, Room 312 — Majors: IS, PHIL, POLS, SPAN
  • Thursday, April 23, 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Building 22, Room 312 — Majors: ANG, GRC, JOUR, LAES, SOC
  • Thursday, May 7, 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. — Majors: COMS, ENGL, ES, HIST, WGQS (minor)
  • Thursday, May 14, 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Building 45, Room 130 — Majors: ART, MU, TH
  • Thursday, May 21, 11:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m., Building 47, Room 24B — Majors: CD, PSY

Why this matters now: moving from a quarter to a semester system can change prerequisite timing, course availability and the pace at which students complete degree requirements. Early advising reduces the risk of losing credit value or delaying graduation.

Practical takeaways students should expect from a visit:

  • Review of how completed quarter courses convert to semester equivalents
  • Assistance building a first-semester schedule under the semester system
  • Clarification on prerequisite sequencing and graduation progress
  • Opportunities to ask department faculty about major-specific planning

Spaces are finite and the College asks students to confirm attendance before coming. For additional details and registration instructions, see the College of Liberal Arts’ semester information page.
