Gorjana jewelry debuts in downtown San Luis Obispo: new destination for coastal shoppers

Laguna Beach jewelry label Gorjana opened its first San Luis Obispo County store Monday, taking over a prominent downtown space on Higuera Street and joining a recent wave of national brands moving into the city center. The arrival is a small but visible sign of change for local retail patterns and for shoppers looking for accessible, design-forward jewelry nearby.

The new boutique is located at 949 Higuera St., the storefront previously occupied by Bluemercury, which closed earlier this year. The opening, reported locally by the San Luis Obispo Tribune, marks another step in Gorjana’s steady expansion from a direct-to-consumer startup into a national brick-and-mortar presence.

Staff members said downtown San Luis Obispo felt like a natural match for the brand’s clientele. Jordan Mendoza, a Gorjana stylist and Cal Poly communications student working the opening, told reporters the store appeals to a mix of ages and styles, a point she said was reflected in early shopper traffic.

Mendoza described the label’s approach as understated and flexible — pieces designed for layering and daily wear rather than flashy statement items. Customers are encouraged to mix chains, pendants and textures to assemble looks that suit individual tastes, she said.

Early bestsellers and customer response

On opening day buyers gravitated toward basics intended for everyday use. Staff highlighted a slim chain favored for layering and the brand’s customizable charms, which can be added to necklaces or bracelets to create personalized combinations.

Shoppers noticed the store’s broad appeal. “It draws people across generations,” said Kelly Rietz, who stopped in with her daughter after recognizing the brand name.

  • Address: 949 Higuera St., downtown San Luis Obispo

Founded in 2004 by Gorjana and Jasen Reidel, the company has built a reputation for jewelry that mixes fine materials with accessible price points, aiming to serve younger shoppers as well as established customers. After opening its first physical shop in 2016, Gorjana has steadily added U.S. locations.

What this means for downtown SLO

The new store is another instance of national retailers moving into downtown San Luis Obispo as older tenants vacate spaces. For shoppers, that brings more product variety and brand-name options within walking distance; for longtime independent businesses it raises questions about competition and rent pressure.

Local merchants said they welcomed the new neighbor on opening morning, offering small gestures of support to the Gorjana team. How the market adjusts in the months ahead will depend on foot traffic patterns and whether national entries broaden the customer base or simply redistribute existing spending.

Gorjana’s downtown shop deliberately emphasizes pieces meant for routine wear and personalization — an approach the company frames as reflecting a relaxed California sensibility. For now, the store’s arrival adds a fresh retail option for residents and students in the area, and serves as another marker of evolving retail dynamics along Higuera Street and in San Luis Obispo.
