Atsuko Okatsuka live at Cal Poly Wednesday: acclaimed comic stops on campus for major tour

Comedian Atsuko Okatsuka performs at the campus Performing Arts Center Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., bringing her “The Big Bowl Tour” to San Luis Obispo and spotlighting a nationally known voice in contemporary stand-up. The appearance matters for students who say it widens the range of arts on campus and offers representation for Asian performers rarely seen in local lineups.

Okatsuka has built a reputation for intimate, autobiographical comedy. Her credits include a Hulu stand-up special titled “Father” and an HBO Max special, “The Intruder,” and she is listed among the voice cast for the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on IMDb.

On campus, the announcement drew mixed reactions: some students who follow her online see the show as an opportunity to hear material about family and cultural identity in a live setting, while others were surprised to learn that the PAC regularly hosts stand-up acts.

Other students reacted to the event from different perspectives. Mechanical engineering freshman Colin Edwards said he hadn’t known about Okatsuka before but appreciates live comedy; he added that price might be a factor when deciding to attend. Fellow freshman Spencer Burckhardt said the performance has put campus comedy events on his radar for the future.

Electrical engineering student Lia Sanchez welcomed the booking as part of a broader push by campus arts groups to bring diverse performers to Cal Poly. “It’s a good way for students to see something different,” she said.
