Kiwanis receive donation as first Joy Fund drive comes to a close

With Christmas hams costing about $11 to $12 each, Kiwanian Glen Muse said nearly $800 in donations will be a big help in meeting the needs of local families.

The Mustang Joy Fund presented Muse with a $770 check Tuesday, the product of about six weeks worth of donations.

The fund debuted this year in the Mustang News to aid a local charity during the holiday season. The charity was chosen by the fund’s independent four-member board of city leaders and residents.

Muse said he appreciated the efforts of the fund and the donations would pay for about three-fourths of the ordered Christmas hams, which will be delivered to needy area families Saturday.

Mustang News staff members said they were amazed by the level of support the project garnered in the community.

“By any measure, we are extremely proud of what this community has helped us do this year,” said Brett Jones, Mustang News editor.

Jones said he is encouraged by the Kiwanis’ project, which ensures local families have food for Christmas and is pleased the Joy Fund was able to aid a Mustang group committed to helping feed its people.

“In my mind, there is no greater meaning of Christmas than to help others,” Jones said, adding he is grateful for the board members who offered to serve and choose a local organization.

“We also owe a debt of gratitude to the board members, many who donated themselves, who chose to serve and believe in this project,” he said.

Muse said, on average, the Kiwanis deliver about four baskets each week to homes, which include nonperishable goods and cold food items purchased by the club. Muse said he maintains the families’ confidentiality, adding most club members don’t know who receives baskets.

Kiwanis receive names of needy community members through from counselors, the Ministerial Alliance, El Reno’s Community Action Agency and Yukon Sharing.
