MPSSAA wrestling championships set for new home in Salisbury from 2027

The Maryland public high school wrestling state championships are moving to Salisbury’s Wicomico Civic Center beginning in 2027, bringing the event to the Eastern Shore for the first time. The decision—approved by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association—aims to accommodate growing participation and is expected to deliver a notable economic lift to the host county.

MPSSAA officials confirmed the two-day meet is scheduled for March 5–6, 2027, and that Wicomico County will host the championships through 2029, with an option to extend the agreement.

A new regional focus

For more than a decade the state tournament called Maryland home in College Park, then moved to Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro in 2016. The upcoming relocation shifts the championship to the Eastern Shore, joining the state field hockey finals already held at Washington College.

MPSSAA Executive Director Andy Warner framed the move as a response to rising interest across the state’s schools. He said the association sees the Civic Center and the surrounding area as a venue that can “raise the profile” of the sport and host Maryland’s top high school wrestlers on a larger stage.

Local officials expect business to follow

Wicomico County leaders are emphasizing the economic upside. A county tourism release cited by local media projects roughly $1.5 million in annual visitor-driven spending tied to the championships, covering hotels, restaurants and other services.

Tourism Manager Justin Polizzi described the selection as a vote of confidence and said staging one of the state’s major youth-sports events supports the county’s strategy to grow sports tourism.

The relocation is also significant for student-athletes and spectators: almost 800 wrestlers from more than 200 public high schools statewide are expected to compete when the event debuts in Salisbury.

Practical implications for teams and fans

Moving the championships to the Eastern Shore affects travel plans, hotel demand and local event infrastructure. Schools and families from central and western Maryland will face longer trips, while businesses on the Shore should see higher foot traffic and room bookings during the tournament weekend.

  • Dates: March 5–6, 2027 (state championships)
  • Hosts: Wicomico Civic Center, Salisbury (through 2029, option to extend)
  • Competitors: ~800 wrestlers from 200+ public high schools
  • Estimated economic impact: ~$1.5 million per year (Wicomico County estimate)

With participation in high school wrestling climbing in recent seasons, the MPSSAA says the championship needed a venue that can handle larger fields and provide a better experience for athletes and spectators alike.

That said, the change introduces logistical questions for many programs: transportation schedules, accommodation availability and potential costs for families and booster clubs. Local organizers will need to coordinate closely with schools as the first event approaches.
