The Florida High School Athletic Association has suspended Barron Collier High School head coach Brannon Tidwell for the entire 2026 season after finding he made improper contact with a student-athlete at another school. The ruling carries immediate consequences for the program’s leadership, recruiting scrutiny and Barron Collier’s preparations for next fall.
The FHSAA’s decision, reported by the Fort Myers News-Press and Naples Daily News, bars Tidwell from coaching through June 3, 2027 and imposes a $5,000 personal fine. The school has also been placed on one year of administrative probation and will face an additional fine, according to the reports.

Assistant coach Andrew Clawson has been named interim head coach for the coming season. School principal Sean Kinsley notified players and families in a letter that Tidwell will remain affiliated with the program in a non-game capacity—but he is prohibited from attending preseason, regular-season or postseason contests while the suspension is in effect.

That restriction means game-day responsibilities, sideline communication and in-person recruitment at events will fall to Clawson and the staff around him, at least for the next calendar year.
What the FHSAA cited
The sanction stems from contact between Tidwell and student-athletes at another program, specifically Lely High School, where several players reportedly transferred to Barron Collier after the 2025 season. Those transfers were part of the FHSAA’s review, the local outlets said.

- Penalty: Suspension through June 3, 2027 and a $5,000 fine for Tidwell.
- School consequences: One year of administrative probation and an additional fine (amount not disclosed in reports).
- Operational effect: Tidwell barred from attending any Barron Collier games during suspension but allowed to perform off-field duties.
- Interim leadership: Andrew Clawson will manage the team on the field in 2026.
Tidwell has acknowledged the penalties, according to the reporting. A Barron Collier alumnus, he took over the program following Mark Jackson’s departure.
Coaching résumé and background
Tidwell brings a mix of collegiate and prep experience to the Cougars. His résumé includes work as Director of Player Personnel and High School Relations at Murray State, athletic director and head coach roles at Thomas Sumter Academy (South Carolina) and St. Joseph’s Academy (Florida), as well as college roles — a graduate assistant position at Mississippi State and a quality-control role at Florida State.
Those connections and past responsibilities helped shape expectations when he returned to his alma mater, but the FHSAA ruling now interrupts his on-field leadership during a critical year for the roster.
Team outlook amid the disruption
Barron Collier finished 2025 at 4-6 overall and 2-1 in Class 3A District 14. The Cougars open the 2026 schedule on August 14 against Cooper City, followed soon after by a matchup with Palmetto Ridge.
Offensively, the team faces changes at quarterback. Hudson Burger is expected to step into a starting role after limited action last season; Sam Powell — who completed 12 of 26 passes for 123 yards and one touchdown across 10 appearances — remains on the roster and was last year’s leading rusher. Running backs Dave Morales and Vincent Akridge return as experienced contributors, each having rushed for more than 145 yards as juniors, with Morales averaging better than five yards per carry.
How the staff transition affects the offense and retention of recent transfers will be among the key storylines for Barron Collier over the summer and into preseason practice.
For now, the program must balance compliance obligations with on-field preparation: the suspension and probation mark a significant administrative setback that will shape recruiting, coaching duties and public perception heading into 2026.
