OSU looks to make statement in Big 12 opener

After a much-needed week off, the Oklahoma State football team will get back to game action at 6:30 tonight as the Cowboys host Texas Tech in their Big 12 Conference opener.

The Cowboys and Red Raiders will kick off at 6:30 p.m. in Boone Pickens Stadium. The game will be aired nationally by ESPN.website commentary new.qxd

Oklahoma State comes into the game against Texas Tech with a record of 2-1, but with two consecutive wins following the hard-fought opening week loss to No.1 Florida State 37-31.

The Pokes have earned two wins against Missouri State, 40-23 in week two and 43-13 over the University of Texas San Antonio in week three.

The impressive start for the Cowboys has earned them a spot in the top 25 national rankings at No.24.

The Red Raiders also come into the game with a 2-1 record and will also be playing their first conference game of the season.

Texas Tech has done it the opposite way from OSU in the first three weeks, as they won their first two games but fell in week three at home to Arkansas by a score of 49-28.

The first two wins were against Central Arkansas 42-35 in week one and the University of Texas El Paso 30-26 in week two.

The Red Raiders are coached by Kliff Kingsbury, who is in his second year on the job in Lubbock.

Coming into the ballgame, Oklahoma State is averaging 38 points per game offensively. The Cowboys have amassed 68 total first downs and average a total of 440.3 yards per contest.

The Pokes are rushing for an average of 176.3 yards per game and passing for an average of 264 yards per contest. OSU has committed two turnovers this season and has totaled 17 penalties for 160 yards.

The Cowboys defense is allowing 24.3 points per game to their opponents, and has allowed 54 first downs so far this season.

Opponents are averaging 352 yards per contest against Oklahoma State, including 111.3 rush yards and 240.7 pass yards. OSU’s defense has forced three turnovers this season.

Oklahoma State running back Tyreek Hill is the leading rusher with 141 yards on 23 carries. Rennie Childs has picked up 143 yards on 35 carries and Desmond Roland has earned 126 yards on 33 carries.

Dax Garman, who came in and replaced the injured J.W. Walsh under center in game two of the season, has passed for 559 yards on 32-of-56 completions with four touchdowns.

On the receiving end, Hill leads in that category as well for the Pokes with 76 yards on nine catches. Former Mustang High School star David Glidden has eight receptions for 165 yards with one touchdown, and Brandon Sheperd has 128 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions.

On the defensive side of the ball, Ryan Simmons leads the way for OSU with 21 tackles. Jordan Sterns has 19 tackles and Seth Jacobs has 17 tackles and one interception this season.

For the Red Raiders statistically, they are averaging 33.3 points per game this season an offense. They have totaled 75 first downs and are averaging 497.7 yards of offense per game.

TTU is rushing for an average of 170.3 yards per game and passing for 327.3 yards. They have turned the ball over six times this year and have committed 30 turnovers for 264 yards.

Defensively, the Red Raiders are allowing 36.7 points per game to their opponents. They have allowed 84 first downs and an average of 432.7 yards per game.

Opponents are racking up 297.7 rush yards per game against Texas Tech and they are averaging 135 pass yards against the TTU defense. The Red Raiders have forced two turnovers this season.

Texas Tech DeAndre Washington leads the way in the rushing department with 215 yards on 40 carries and one touchdown. Justin Stockton is right behind Washington with 190 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. Quinton White has 82 yards on 15 carries this season.

TTU quarterback Davis Webb is leading the way through the air with 982 yards on 83-of-128 passing with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions.

For the Red Raiders in the receiving department, it’s been Jakeem Grant with 283 yards on 20 receptions and one touchdown. Brad Marquez has 251 yards on 18 receptions and five touchdowns, and Reginald Davis has 152 yards and two touchdowns on 12 receptions.

Keenon Ward, Sam Eguavoen and Pete Robertson are all tied with 21 tackles this season, with Robertson also having an interception for the Red Raiders.
