The Lady Broncos softball team continues to roll through its regular season with another perfect record last week.

Mustang went on the road in a hostile environment and took on perennial state power Edmond North in a Sept. 8 district matchup,  defeating the Lady Huskies 6-2 behind a stellar pitching performance from senior right-hander Jayden Chestnut.website commentary new.qxd

The hard-throwing Chestnut also did her part at the plate to help the Bronco girls past the pesky Huskies. In the top of the fifth inning, Chestnut sent a towering shot over the left field wall with a runner on base, giving Mustang a 2-1 advantage over Edmond North.

“That was a really good win for us,” Mustang coach Bryan Howard said. “That was a total team win in a tough environment against a good opponent. Jayden was outstanding and offensively and defensively, we played as well as we have all year.”

The Lady Broncos continued the offensive barrage and put four more runs on the board compared to the Lady Huskies with one, giving Mustang the four-run victory.

The Broncos returned home for a Sept. 11 district matchup with Choctaw. The Yellowjackets came into the game with a subpar record, but most of their losses had been close games against tough opponents.

Choctaw would keep that style going against MHS, as the Lady Broncos earned a 4-3 victory in the game.

Chestnut was in the circle for Mustang, and she went the distance, getting the win and striking out 12 Choctaw batters in the process.

Chestnut had just one walk in the game and allowed four hits to the Yellowjackets.

After a scoreless first inning for both teams, Mustang got on the board with one run in the bottom of the second after Chestnut led off the frame with a double to the left field wall. Junior Lexi Vargas got the first RBI of the game when she drove in the runner from third base on an error by the Choctaw third baseman.

In the third inning, the Lady Broncos added one more run to their lead. Freshman Audri Morrison led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Fellow freshman Zoe Jones then knocked a double in the gap, sending Morrison to third. Chestnut followed with a suicide bunt that scored Morrison to give MHS the 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 Mustang through the fourth inning, but the Lady Broncos scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run, two-out double to the wall by senior Jacquelyn Kelm.

Choctaw got all four of its hits off Chestnut in the top of the sixth inning. The hits, combined with a Mustang error, led to a three-run Yellowjacket inning, cutting the Bronco lead to one run at 4-3 heading into the seventh and final frame.

Chestnut bowed her back in the top of the seventh inning and shut down the Choctaw offense to three-up three-down, sealing the MHS victory.

Mustang finished the game with eight total hits, with Chestnut accounting for three of those base knocks.

The two wins last week has MHS at 18-3 overall this season.

“The only thing I took away from the Choctaw game was that we were able to get the win,” Howard said. “I thought we got up early and we relaxed a little bit. We didn’t have a good day offensively at all. We swung at some poor pitches. We were undisciplined. Hopefully, that was a wake-up call for us, because we have to be better than that going forward.”

The Lady Broncos will have a busy week this week, as they had a double-header with Putnam City North on the road Monday evening. They then host Moore at 6:30 p.m. tonight in a crucial district matchup that will decide who gets the top seed in the district.

Moore already defeated the Bronco girls earlier this month at home 2-0.

“We understand what’s at stake when Moore comes here,” Howard said. “They have beaten us four consecutive times. Our girls will be ready to play. We are looking forward to that one.”

This weekend, Mustang will compete in the COAC tournament at Yukon High School. The tournament will run Friday and Saturday.
