SCHOOL BOARD BUYS HISTORIC METHODIST CHURCH
CAROLYN COLE
Edition:Saturday, July 16, 2011

Mustang School District paid $150,000 for a piece of land containing the historic old Methodist church building this week.
Board members voted Thursday to buy 0.79 acres on the northwest corner of Dowden and Snyder drives. The land contains the former church, which is one of the oldest standing structures in town, as well as the church's living quarters and an adjacent rental house.
MSD Superintendent Bonnie Lightfoot said officials do not have any immediate plans for the buildings.
“We have not made decisions on what the property will be,” she said.
The property is south of land Mustang purchased in 2009 and turned into tennis courts and across the street from the district's bus barn.
A.D. Lightsey purchased the property in 2002, and his son Mike Lightsey told The Mustang News in March 2003 they wanted to refurbish the old church and turn it into a wedding chapel. Besides the former church's condition, A.D. Lightsey said his son's dream was never really in the cards. He doubted young couples would be attracted to the old church for their big day, and the location in Old Town offered no place for their families and friends to park.
Lightsey said he repaired the existing living quarters, which both have tenants. He considered building another house on Dowden on the property, but that never happened.
The former church building survived a 1927 tornado that gutted much of Old Town, Mustang Historical Society President Dolly Priest said, but it was never placed on the Registry for Historic Places. There are a handful of buildings in Mustang that are older.
Priest said she has fond childhood memories of the church where she grew up. The congregation outgrew the building and moved to their existing home on state Highway 152.
More than a year ago, Priest said, former school board president Maxine Morris asked her if the historical society planned renovate the church. She said she told her the group couldn't raise enough money, and the effort would be a massive undertak- ing.
“They are going to have to bulldoze it down,” Priest said. “I know everybody hates it, but it is in such disrepair.”
