MUSTANG AMONG CITIES HIT WITH WATER RESTRICTIONS
CAROLYN COLE
Edition:Thursday, July 14, 2011

Pond water may be used to keep Mustang city soccer and softball fields green while the city remains under water restrictions.
Parks Director Justin Battles said mandatory watering restrictions will not impact Mustang Aquatic Center, but it does affect parkland.
While the softball season is over, he said youth soccer season is heating up. Games and several tournaments are planned for the Wild Horse Park fields.
Mustang homeowners are under mandatory water rationing after Oklahoma City imposed restrictions Monday.
Oklahoma City implemented an even/odd lawn water rotation restriction over the weekend and made it mandatory on Monday. City spokeswoman Debbie Ragan said the problem is water pressure in neighborhoods in northwest and southwest areas.
Hand watering is allowed any time.
Mustang City Manager Mike Rutledge said officials will enforce the ban. A violation could result in a fine of $124 in Mustang.
“If water usage does not decrease, there is a high risk of a full water rationing being enacted,” he said.
The restriction means homeowners with even house numbers can water lawns only on even-numbered days. Those with odd-numbered houses are to water lawns only on odd numbered days.
The restriction includes Oklahoma City's municipal water customers — Mustang, Yukon, Piedmont, El Reno, Moore, Edmond, Norman, Blanchard, the Village, Warr Acres, Lake Aluma, Deer Creek water district and Canadian County District 3.
Mustang must buy Oklahoma City water to blend with its well water because the Environmental Protection Agency beefed up arsenic standards in 2006. Before, 50 parts per billion of arsenic was allowed, and that was lowered to 10 parts per billion. Because several of Mustang's wells don't meet that standard, the water must be blended from other wells and Oklahoma City water to meet the requirement.
Mustang is required to follow Oklahoma City's water restrictions in the city's contract.
Despite dry conditions, Ragan said the problem isn't supply. Oklahoma City drew water from Lake Canton in November and May. But as temperatures soar well above the century mark, water usage has also skyrocketed. Over the weekend Oklahoma City used 176 million gallons in one day. Under normal conditions, it uses an average of 100 million gallons.
On June 24, Oklahoma City issued a voluntary restriction on watering from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. in neighborhoods west of Council Road and between NW 10th and SW 29th streets. Ragan said that recommendation has been expanded to 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and includes the whole city.
Residents get home, turn on the sprinkler system, start preparing dinner, washing dishes and taking baths. Ragan said this high usage during peak times is dragging down water pressure at the edges of Oklahoma City.
“Typically citizens do the right thing,” she said.
Residents are asked to water in the early morning so the moisture has time to sink in before the heat of the day evaporates most of the water away. Ragan said residents should also make sure sprinklers are aimed on their lawns and not the street or sidewalk.
