Thieves struck Mustang neighborhoods hard Friday and Sunday night taking more than $12,000 in property and causing damage to vehicles.
Capt. Willard James said police are investigating these incidents and warned residents to take steps to protect their property. Many of the vehicles targeted last week were left unlocked, he said.
Thieves took loose valuables, including wallets, laptop computers, MP3 players, cell phone chargers, global positioning systems and digital cameras, as well as stereo equipment. James said residents shouldn't leave anything of value in their cars in plain sight.
“We will be stepping up patrols in the residential areas,” he said.
Police give this timeline of reported incidents:
May 14
uA resident in the 500 block of West Forster Drive reported someone took the faceplate from his stereo and broke his dashboard. Estimated loss is $200.
uA resident in the 600 block of West Forster Drive reported someone entered three vehicles at the home. No damage was reported to one vehicle, while another suffered a broken dashboard. Thieves took a global positioning system and a cell phone charger from a third vehicle. Estimated loss is $495.
uA resident in the 600 block of West Forster Drive reported someone took a backpack and a digital voice recorder, with an estimated value of $35 from his car. No damage was reported.
uA resident in the 300 block of West Strasburg Way reported someone took his car stereo, valued at about $120. He told police he believes the theft happened between 1:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
May 16
uA resident in the 1000 block of West Dorchester Way reported someone went through one vehicle and did not take anything. A digital camera was missing from another car's center console and a bag of hand tools was missing from its trunk. Estimated value of the camera and tools is $599.
uA resident in the 1000 block of West Dorchester Way reported someone took his military-issue bullet-proof vest from his vehicle. The vest is valued at $1,500. He told officers the theft occurred between 3 a.m. and 6:45 a.m.
uA resident in the 800 block of West Alamo Way reported someone rummaged through his family's two cars. Both were left unlocked. He reported a laptop computer, five gift cards, $200 in cash and five bottles of prescription medications were missing. The property has an estimated value of $1,788. He told police the theft occurred between 11:45 p.m. and 6:30 a.m.
uA resident in the 500 block of North Geronimo Way reported to police someone took a CD player, a case containing 150 CDs, a child's computer and two dolls from his car. Estimated loss is $3,584.
uA resident in the 300 block of South Brookview Lane reported someone took car stereos from two vehicles parked at the home. Both were unlocked. The stereos are valued at $274. He said he believed the theft happened between 1 a.m. and 6:45 a.m.
uA resident in the 600 block of South Brookview Lane reported to police someone entered his car and took the dashboard apart. Thieves took a digital camera, 60 compact discs, his car stereo, a CD player and a MP3 player. The missing property is valued at $3475. He told police he believes the theft happened between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m.
uA resident in the 600 block of North Chisholm Terrace reported someone took a GPS and a phone charger from one vehicle and an aviation headset and another GPS from a second vehicle. Both were left unlocked. Estimated loss is $640. He told police he believes the theft occurred between 11 p.m. and 4:30 a.m.
