NEW CHEERING GROUP TO GET INTO THE SPIRIT AT MHS
CAROLYN COLE
Edition:Saturday, March 26, 2011

More Mustang High School students will have the chance next year to cheer the Broncos to victory with the formation of a new spirit team.
The Bronco spirit members will become Mustang's main cheerleaders and the public face at games and events, district cheer coordinator Meg Corn said. However, the spirit cheerleaders will not compete at regional, state or national events. Mustang's competitive cheer and pompom squads will be separate, although some students may cheer on both the competitive and spirit teams.
“They (spirit team) will be doing the sideline chants at the football games, basketball games, all of that,” she said. “They decorate the locker rooms. They do candy baskets and gifts for the players. It's just to promote school spirit.”
The idea is to alleviate some of the pressure from cheerleaders and pom dancers, Corn said, while also boosting Bronco spirit. While the root of pom and cheer is school spirit, she said in recent years the focus has shifted to competitions. Students are so focused with 6 a.m. daily practices fine tuning their routines for contest and raising money for the trips, that cheering on the Broncos became an “afterthought.”
“The school spirit end has been dying, and the competition, because that is where it is at competition, has been the main focus,” Corn said. “I want to get back to the brass, to the bottom. I want to simplify and get back to what we are here for — promoting school spirit.”
Tryouts for the new spirit team were held last week, separate from pom and cheer tryouts in April. In past years, cheer and pom tryouts have drawn more than 300 students.
This new team will give about 20 more teens a chance to participate. Mustang has about 20 members each on varsity pom and cheer team, plus alternates, 15 members at the mid-high and 15 each at the two middle schools. Some students will be able to cheer both on the spirit team and the competitive squad.
Corn said the change could attract more students. In the past, she said she's had talented cheerleaders who didn't want to compete on the varsity level but did want to cheer the team on the sidelines and perform at halftime.
Then she's also had students who hungered for competition but couldn't cheer at games. Now, those teens pay to compete an all-star squad at a private gym. Next school year, that will no longer be a conflict.
“I have a girl who is an athletic trainer,” Corn said. “She can't be a trainer and be on Mustang varsity cheer because she has to work the games. She is going to try out.”
As Corn explained the changes to Mustang School Board members recently, President Dona Zanotti asked if the spirit team could be expanded.
“Or there is 300 in the stands all wearing the same T-shirt, being loud,” Zanotti said. “That's what I am digging.”
Corn said someday she'd like it to be a class where students would learn the chants and take turns out on the court or field. The rest would be cheering from the stands. Creating a large pep squad would take more resources, she said.
“What I would love to see in time is any kid can be on it,” she said.
