GEARY POLICE CHIEF RESIGNS AFTER ARREST
MUSTANG NEWS
Edition:Thursday, January 20, 2011

Geary's police chief has resigned after being arrested on a complaint of driving under the influence.
According to the report filed by Canadian County Deputy Joseph Grimes, Melvin Daniel Bates was pulled over at about 2 a.m. Friday when the car he was driving was weaving and traveling at a high rate of speed.
After pulling Bates' car over, Grimes reported he discovered two other passengers in the car, as well as an open container of beer. The deputy said Bates' eyes were bloodshot, he slurred his speech and Grimes noticed a strong alcohol odor.
Grimes' report noted the deputy became aware that Bates was Geary's police chief after seeing his gold police badge. According to the report, at that time Bates asked, “Can you give me a break?”
Bates was taken to the Canadian County Jail, where he was booked on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, transporting an open container and driving left of center in a marked no-passing zone.
This is not Bates' first brush with the legal system.
In May, Bates was charged with passing a $20 bogus check to an El Reno business. Bates pleaded guilty and received a deferred sentence, contingent on him paying $322 restitution and fines and completing 10 hours of community service.
Calls made to Bates were not answered as of press time.
