Mustang schools marked Red Ribbon Week with rallies, and children promised to live drug free.
Red Ribbon Week is held in memory of Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, a federal drug enforcement officer who was killed in 1985 while working undercover to investigate a Mexican drug cartel.
Our cameras caught some of the fun at Lakehoma Elementary as children tied their pledges to balloons and released them into a strong northerly wind.
Jon and Anne LaPuzza, both Oklahoma City police officers, asked Lakehoma students to think for themselves.
“A real friend isn''t going to ask you to do something you don''t want to do,” Jon LaPuzza told students.
At Mustang Trails Elementary, dozens of students performed cheers and chants for classmates, pledging to be drug-free.
Mid-high band musicians and cheerleaders also performed for Mustang Trails students.
