Mustang ended a drought of five years Monday.
The Bronco boys' golf team finished fifth out of 16 teams in the west regional, earning them a bid to the state tournament for the first time since 2004 when MHS was state runner up.
The top six teams in the regional receive a bid to state. Mustang finished with a team score of 309. The Broncos were one stroke ahead of sixth-place Yukon (310). Three other teams finished with a score of 311.
“They just did barely make it, but our kids did what they had to do to get in,” MHS head coach Galen Wolfe said.
Edmond North won the regional with a score of 290. Edmond Santa Fe was runner up (293), Putnam City North was third (298) and Edmond Memorial took fourth (304).
The state bid is also the first one under Coach Wolfe, who took over the golf team in 2005.
The tournament, originally scheduled to be 36 holes, was reduced to 18 because of the inclement weather. Mustang had just made the turn from the front nine to the back when the rain hit. There was a 45-minute delay.
“There was no way we were going to finish before dark, and they wouldn't have us come back for a second day,” Wolfe said.
Logan Marshall carded a 75 to pace the Broncos. Chad Arnold shot a 76, while Nick Jackson shot a 78. Grant Bissell turned in a round of 80 for the fourth and final mark going toward the team score. Mitchell Dennard shot an 81.
The state tournament will be held Monday and Tuesday at Emerald Falls Golf Club in Broken Arrow. The boys will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. Detailed information such as tee times can be found at ossaa.com on the sports/golf tab. There will be 12 teams at the event.
“We're looking at trying to finish in at least the top 10 in state,” Wolfe said.
