Mustang guts out win, advances to semis
By Kyle Salomon,
CATOOSA – Mustang advanced to the semi-final round of the state tournament with a 48-42 victory against Bixby Thursday afternoon.
Junior forward Geoffrey Hightower led the Broncos in the scoring department with 12 points in the game. Junior guard Terrell Williams had 11 points.
Hightower also led Mustang with seven rebounds in the first-round against the Spartans. Sophomore forward Austin Meyer had five rebounds and senior guard Demarion Love finished with four boards.
The Broncos were sluggish to start the game, especially on the offensive end of the floor where they managed just five points in the opening period.
The Spartans’ plan was to slow the game down and force Mustang into playing a half-court style, which is the opposite of the Broncos’ usual up tempo approach.
Mustang exploded in the second period as they scored 20 points using their full-court pressure defense against Bixby’s guards.
MHS never trailed in the second half despite several Spartan runs tying the game or cutting the lead to one possession.
The Broncos were able to make clutch free throws down the stretch, sealing the six-point victory.
Mustang made 10 out of 16 free throws and pulled down 20 rebounds in the game. The Broncos forced Bixby into seven turnovers and committed four themselves.
Sophomore guard Binky Colbert scored seven points in the game. Love scored six points. Sophomore guard Jakolby Long scored six points and had one rebound. Meyer scored six points and sophomore forward Bryce Roberts grabbed one board in the contest.
The Broncos will return to action at 9 p.m. Friday against the winner of Putnam City West and Muskogee.
The Patriots and Roughers will play tonight at Catoosa.
Friday night’s game will be in the Mabee Center at Oral Roberts University. If Mustang wins the semi-final game, they will play in the state championship game Saturday night.
