Wrestlers grab fourth at regional

Mustang placed five grapplers in the top four and eight in the top five for a team finish of fourth place at the Southmoore regional last weekend.
Five Broncos finished in the top four of their respective weight classes and three other wrestlers finished in fifth place.
Freshmen Trey Edwards and Gage McBride, and seniors Gareth Ballard, David McCright and Clay Feland were all top four placers in their weight divisions.
Senior Zac Julian, junior Zach Butler and senior Mark Casteneda took fifth place in their weight classes.
“Finishing fourth overall as a team in the regional is a great accomplishment for our guys,” Mustang head coach Dave Rankin said. “Their hard work, dedication and commitment really paid off for them in the end.”
In the 106-pound weight class, it was sophomore Jason Clark competing for Mustang. Clark fell in his first match to Southmoore in a first-period fall. He rebounded to defeat Lawton in his second match with a first-period fall. Clark fell in his third match against U.S. Grant 3-2.
Mustang did not have 113-pound entry in the regional.
In the 120-pound weight class, Edwards took third overall. The freshman grappler defeated Edmond Santa Fe 7-3 in his first bout, fell to Yukon 12-0 in his second match, defeated Choctaw 8-2 in his third bout, beat Edmond Memorial in match No.4, and took down Moore in his fifth and final match.
In the 126-pound weight class, McBride finished fourth overall. McBride defeated Choctaw with a second-period fall in his first bout. He took out Edmond North in a second-period fall in match No.2. McBride fell to Yukon in his third match in a first-period fall. He beat Norman in his fourth match and fell in his final match to Putnam City North.
In the 132-pound weight division, Ballard finished second overall. Ballard defeated Norman in his first bout with a first-period fall. He took down Edmond Memorial in match No.2 in an 18-2 technical fall. Ballard defeated Moore in his third bout 3-2. In the championship bout he fell to Putnam City.
In the 138-pound weight class, Jordan Kalmeyer defeated Southmoore in his first bout in a second-period fall. He fell to Moore in his second match in a second-period fall. Kalmeyer took down Westmoore 7-4 in his third bout, and fell in his fourth match to Choctaw.
In the 145-pound weight class, Robert King fell in his first bout to Edmond North in a third-period fall. He lost his second match to Westmoore in a second-period fall.
In the 152-pound weight division, Julian had a bye in the first round. He defeated Southmoore 8-6 in his first actual match. Julian fell to Putnam City North in his second match 3-1. He fell in overtime to Yukon in his third and final bout.
In the 160-pound weight class, it was Redmon Wilkerson taking his first bout in a second-period fall over Edmond Memorial. He fell in his second bout to Edmond Santa Fe 10-0. Wilkerson lost his third match to Putnam City 1-0.
In the 170-pound weight class, Butler earned a first-round bye. His second-round match was a loss to Edmond Memorial with a second-period fall. He responded in his third bout with a first-round fall against Putnam City. He defeated Edmond Santa Fe in his fourth match. In his final match, Butler fell to Choctaw.
In the 182-pound weight class, McCright took third place overall. He had a bye in the first round, but fell to Yukon in his first actual match in a second-period fall. McCright then had another bye before taking out Edmond Memorial in an 18-1 technical fall. He defeated Edmond Santa Fe in his next bout before losing to Yukon in his final match.
In the 195-pound weight class, Casteneda defeated Edmond Santa Fe in his first match in a first-period fall. He fell to Yukon in his second bout 3-0. Casteneda defeated Edmond Memorial in his third bout in a second-period fall. He fell to Putnam City West in his final match.
In the 220-pound weight class, Feland took fourth place. He had a first-round bye. He took out Edmond Memorial in his first actual bout 8-1. He fell to Yukon in his second match 11-9. Feland defeated Norman in his third bout and fell to Putnam City in his fourth match.
In the 285-pound weight division, Dylan Needham fell to Norman North in his first match 4-0. Needham fell to Putnam City in his second bout 6-5.
