Girls’ soccer going on the offensive

By Kyle Salomon,

For the past several seasons, the Mustang girls soccer team has been a defensive-minded team that plays physical.

The Bronco ladies open their 2014 regular season at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Norman at home. They will also travel to Yukon for a 6 p.m. showdown with the Millers March 7.

Last season the Mustang girls finished with an 11-5 record and semifinal appearance in the state playoffs, where they eventually lost to state champion Bishop Kelley.

“We are going to be a different-looking team this year than we have looked the past several years,” Mustang head coach Mike Mason said. “We have been a team centered around solid defense, but this year we will be more centered around our offense. We have strong defensive players, but we have a lot more experience on the offensive end of the field.”

The Bronco girls graduated seven seniors from last year’s group. Mustang lost four defenders, two midfielders and one forward to graduation.

The seven seniors from last year’s team are Madison Brackett, Shelbey Brady, Jamie Carroll, Micaela Fox, Marilyn Kalin, Shelbi Kuykendall and Taylor Moseley.

Mustang will have 11 seniors on this year’s team. The seniors are Lexi Jones, Emily Sample, Sydni Wiles, Bridget Byers, Anna Crawford, Alexandra Espinoza, Alondra Garcia, Alexandria Jones, Gabriela Pelma, Cindy Reyes and Jessica Strassle.

Returning key players from last year’s group include junior Brandi Hutchinson, Lexi Jones, sophomore Jaci Jones, junior Alina Magruder, Wiles, Crawford, Strassle, junior Kelsey Bumgarner and junior Abby Karbs.

The starting forwards on this year’s team will be Wiles, Lexi Jones and Magruder. The starting midfielders are Crawford, Raegan Coil and Jaci Jones. The starting defenders will be Addison Glover, Strassle, Hannah Evans and Bumgarner.

The two goalkeepers this season will be Hutchinson and Abby Karbs.

“We have been working really hard in the preseason,” Mason said. “We are excited to see how far this team can go this year.”
