Senior center Brooke Irwin led with 20 points and 13 rebounds in the Mustang girls’ 20-point victory at Putnam City West.

The Lady Broncos defeated the Lady Patriots 48-28 Feb. 18 to complete the season sweep of PC West. Mustang defeated PCW at home earlier this season.

Irwin was the lone Bronco in double figures in the scoring department, but fellow senior forward Laci Joyner reached double figures in rebounds with 10 on the night.

Sophomore guard Addyson Lawson had eight points and five rebounds, while senior guard Tori Shockley finished with eight points and three rebounds.

“I liked the way we came out and played with a sense of urgency,” Mustang head coach Kevin Korstjens said. “We had a tough week the week before, so it was important for our confidence to come out strong, and we did that. We wanted to establish Brooke (Irwin) inside from the beginning of the game.”

The win at Putnam City West was much needed for Mustang as the Broncos had suffered two consecutive losses in a row the previous week.

The Broncos defense was stout early in the game as it allowed just three points in the first period and 15 total points in the first half.

Mustang quickly pushed its lead to double digits in the opening frame and never let it get back to single digits the remainder of the game.

The Broncos had a strong rebounding night totaling 42 in the game. Mustang committed 16 turnovers and forced just five from the Lady Patriots.

MHS made 15 out of 22 free throws in the game.

“I thought we never took our foot off of the pedal,” Korstjens said. “We stayed in attack mode the entire game, even when we were up big. I thought we played really solid defense the whole night. Anytime you can hold a team to below 30 points, you are doing something right.”
