Grapplers take bite out of Jaguars

Even with two wrestlers down with injuries, the Mustang grappling squad took down Westmoore in a dual competition Jan. 30.
The Bronco wrestlers won nine out of 14 matches, including four pins against the Jaguar grapplers in their 41-25 victory at Mustang High School.
Mustang head coach Dave Rankin said he was proud of the way his team competed in the dual.
“I knew it was going to be a tough match against Westmoore,” he said. “They have some good, tough talent in the room, so to get the victory was really nice to see for our kids. They have worked extremely hard, and their dedication and commitment is really paying off right now.”
In the 106-pound match, Jason Clark took on the 106-pounder from Westmoore. Clark fell in the dual in a first-period fall.
In the 113-pound battle, Mustang was forced to forfeit to the Jaguars because of an injury.
Mustang’s Trey Edwards competed for the Broncos in the 120-pound weight class against the 120-pounder from Westmoore. Edwards battled hard in the match, but fell 16-3 to his Jaguar opponent.
In the 126-pound weight division, Mustang’s Gage McBride got the win against the Westmoore 126-pounder by a score of 9-2.
Gareth Ballard competed for the Broncos in the 132-pound weight class against the Westmoore 132-pounder. Ballard dominated the match from the opening whistle as he went on to win in a technical fall 16-1.
In the 138-pound weight division, Jordan Kalmeyer defeated his 138-pound opponent from Westmoore. Kalmeyer won the match 14-8.
Wyatt Riggs got his opportunity in the 145-pound weight battle with the 145-pounder from Westmoore. Riggs competed hard throughout the three-period match, but fell 14-8 to his opponent.
In the 152-pound weight class, the Broncos had to forfeit their second dual of the event to Westmoore due to an injury.
Redmon Wilkerson competed in the 160-pound weight division for Mustang against the 160-pounder from Westmoore. Wilkerson won a tight battle with the Jaguar grappler 4-3.
In the 170-pound weight match-up, Zach Butler dominated his Jaguar 170-pound opponent with a first-period fall.
David McCright wrestled in the 182-pound weight class for Mustang against the 182-pounder from Westmoore. McCright won the match with ease with a first-period fall.
In the 195-pound weight class, Caden Truelove took on the 195-pounder from Westmoore and defeated the Jaguar wrestler with a third-period fall.
Clay Feland continued his strong season at the 220-pound weight class with a third-period fall against the Jaguar 220-pounder.
Dylan Needham competed in the 285-pound weight battle and defeated his heavyweight opponent from Westmoore 5-3 in a thrilling overtime match-up.
“I was really proud of all of the guys,” Rankin said. “I thought we wrestled with a lot of strength and we were technically sound throughout the match. A lot of our seniors had strong matches, but our young guys also performed really well.”
The Bronco wrestlers hosted Putnam City North at 7 p.m. Tuesday for a dual match-up, and they host Putnam City at 7 tonight as they celebrate senior night at Mustang High School.
